Old kinko ji-ari shakuhachi signed “NanChiku” 2.0 in C – restored by Chikudo
This kinko style ji-ari shakuhachi is probably a pre-war instrument.
The hanko signature says “NanChiku” (south bamboo). It is a good intermediate level ji-ari typical of old kinko styled shakuhachi which I love ! A deep tone colour with a dark and mysterious touch. The pitch is good and the bamboo resonance (“chikuin”) is very pleasant.
The overall pitch is high, in between C and C# depending on the blowing angle.
Thus it is a solo shakuhachi only.
Utaguchi design is very comfortable giving a delightful feeling in mouth.
I can feel that this shakuhachi has been played a lot !
I did quite a lot of work on this flute :
– repairing an important crack on the upper part with 6 inlaid rattan bindings
– Correction of the bore with ji; a spot in the middle was really too wide which resulted in weaker tone of Otsu no Ro, Tsu and Re.
– Ajustments on utaguchi.
– New urushi lacquer in the bore.
